Aperture Plugins

If Aperture’s editing capabilities don’t fully do the job for you, you have several options for spicing up its post-processing capabilities with plugins.

The best set of Aperture plugins is the Nik Software Complete Collection (now on sale for just $149  – look on the right side of the Amazon screen to make sure you buy it from Amazon directly), which includes these very popular Nik software products:

  • Dfine 2.0 – noise reduction
  • Viveza – precisely control color and light
  • Color Efex Pro 3.0 – 52 photo filters with over 250 effects
  • Silver Efex Pro 2 – professional-quality black and white conversion
  • Sharpener Pro 3.0 – advanced sharpening tool
  • HDR Efex Pro – high-dynamic range (HDR) imaging

I recently posted an extensive review of the Nik Software Complete Collection for Aperture, and I recommend it 1000%.

Another popular options is Tiffen’s Dfx Digital Filter Software, which simulates the following:
  • Tiffen glass camera filters
  • specialized lenses
  • optical lab processes
  • film grain (YES!)

Dfx also offers:

  • exacting color correction
  • natural light and photographic effects
  • Rosco and GamColor Gel libraries
  • Rosco and Gam Gobo libraries for lighting effects
Tiffen’s package looks pretty awesome – particularly the option to add film grain, which I would love for my black and white images. The natural light effects also seem pretty cool for adding dimension to an image.
Amazon is quickly running out of stock on Dfx, though you should keep in mind that there’s a stand-alone version available for just half the price.

I have the DFX plug-in and highly recommend it. It’s a little overpriced, in my opinion, but a good program.
